THE LOUDEST ENGINE OUT 12 SEPTEMBER 2011 ON COOKING VINYL
UK TOUR STARTS NEXT WEEK
Howling
Bells will release their new album on September 12th on Cooking Vinyl.
Recorded in Las Vegas with The Killers’ Mark Stoermer producing, The
Loudest Engine will be preceded by a clutch of live shows, including a
London date at the Electric Ballroom on September 15th.
A raw,
psychedelic third record, and the sequel to 2009's "Radio Wars", the
recording of "The Loudest Engine" saw Howling Bells, the
Australian-formed, London-based four piece comprising singer/ guitarist
Juanita Stein and her brother Joel (lead guitarist), drummer Glenn
Moule, and bassist Brendan Picchio - forge a sonic union with Nevada's
expansive surroundings and Las Vegas's street-soiled vibe.
Says
Stein of the album, “There's a singular sound which is more folk and
rock than our last two albums, but it's interpreted in a modern sense.
It wasn't a conscious effort to make a '70s tinged record. It was a very
natural progression.
"The album shows that we're 21st century
kids making a modern psychedelic record. [It] is our grown up record.
The first was about that great initial leap, the second was us exploring
different waters. This one
is us, all having met at one place, at one time. I think this record
will change people's perspectives of the band."
UK TOUR + MILES KANE UK TOUR + NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS SUPPORT
New Manchester based six piece FOLKS have released a free download of a track called ‘Avalanche’
and start their own headlining UK tour this week before they go on tour
with Miles Kane in October and support Noel Gallagher’s High Flying
Birds at the Roundhouse in London in October. The band will also appear
on Radio 2 this weekend (Saturday 10th September) when Noel takes over Dermot O’Leary’s show between 3pm – 6pm and will perform two songs.
Bringing together classic song writing with emotive vocals and irresistible melodies, Folks
make music to be listened to and enjoyed over and over. The band were
formed when guitarist and writer Michael Beasley hooked up with vocalist
Scott Anderson, and they relocated to the US to record what would end
up being their debut album, to be released early 2012. On their
return the duo pulled together a full band (Thom Fripp – lead guitar,
Harry Gumery – bass, Wil Akroyd - keyboards and Elliot Barlow –drums)
which ensured this group could also let rip live. They kept themselves
busy in a rehearsal studio, out of the way, letting the tunes evolve
into another side of Folks – one with absolute precision playing and
amazing stage energy.

the Daily Telegraph enthused “her best work and arguably Beck’s best in

THE COMMISSION (album track) - VIDEO
Art pop architects Breton are releasing a stunning new video to accompany their new song ‘The Commission’. It’s a strikingly beautiful song with a black heart and overwhelming sense of inevitable foreboding. The accompanying video perfectly encapsulates this. It was directed by BretonLABS and Stuart Sinclair, a motion graphics artist who makes computer generated clips of space and satellites. Breton front man - artistic experimentalist, songwriter and filmmaker Roman Rappak, invited Sinclair to collaborate on the video. The actor is Patrick Lyons, a beat poet from Boston – and legend on the south London squat party scene. The pair met when Breton started out and regularly played the squat party circuit.
‘The Commission’ is taken from Breton’s forthcoming debut album, ‘Other People’s Problems’, due for release in February 2012 on Fat Cat Records. It’s the follow up to their critically acclaimed ‘Counter Balance’ EP, which was released in December last year on Hemlock, the specialist label responsible for launching the careers of James Blake and Fantastic Mr Fox. The EP was lauded by the blogs, raved about by the likes of Dazed & Confused, Clash and The Fly and championed by key tastemakers at radio, in particular Mr Huw Stephens.
Under the moniker BretonLABS, the band have delivered innovative remixes for Local Natives, Tricky, Maps & Atlases, Tom Vek, Temper Trap and made videos for Penguin Prison, 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster and Flats.
Breton recently supported Tom Vek on his sold out comeback tour of the UK.

London based duo Age of Consent release their debut single “The Beach” on September 5th 2011.
Age of Consent are Joe Reeves and Darren Cullen, former members of Shitdisco.
Since leaving Shitdisco, they have set up their own studio in East London and started working on new material as well as producing great remixes for the likes of Gary Numan, La Roux and Yuksek among others.
They make dark, dystopian gothic-pop influenced by bands and production duos such as The Knife, Suicide and Yeasayer.
Their debut single “The Beach” was recorded in a 16th century Italian farmhouse with producer Luke Smith who has previously worked with Depeche Mode, Foals and Crystal Fighters.
Directed by Gareth Phillips (Cat's Eyes, Is Tropical) the video references the French Situationist movement and their idea; “Sous le paves. la plage” / “Beneath the pavement, the beach”. Drawing upon dream-like imagery, it explores the desire to escape from normality.
In only a few months of playing live, Age of Consent have taken their drum heavy live show to Italy and Austria. They have played with The Drums, Fiction, Is Tropical, Koudlam & Tiga. They have already confirmed a few live dates, with more to be announced soon:

Fresh from the holy fields of Glastonbury, where they performed to rapt crowds not once, not twice, but three times, Danny and the Champions of the World are in top gear and heading down a motorway near you with an eleven date headline tour. Known for their rocking live performances, the band have had audiences clamouring for more of the feel-good music hailed by Q Magazine as “a pure passion revue” and garnering critical acclaim daily.
First though, You Don’t Know (My Heart Is In The Right Place) is hitting virtual stores on the 8th of August, as the first single from the forthcoming album, Hearts And Arrows, released on the 18th of July. Uplifting, rootsy and full of soul, You Don’t Know punches its message home with a conviction and certainty that’s not afraid to show some fragility behind its strength. An atmospheric video by award-winning director Simon Minett shows the band at their best: in a rundown warehouse in Hackney, performing their hearts out.
Danny & The Champions of The World have also announced a UK tour in September. Full dates below:

Hailing from "a maelstrom of reinvention, reckless idealism, and rainbow-chasing" known as Los Angeles, Puro Instinct are the psychedelic pop discovery that's about to make your year look a while lot stronger.
The speech marks come courtesy of their mouthpiece, 24-year-old Piper Kaplan, who joined by her 16-year-old sister Skylar have cut one of the most striking and formidable pairings on the West Coast indie-rock circuit in recent years. Piper, and absurdly brilliant talisman, Skylar. Joined by an all-star squad of believers: Cody Porter, Jessie Clavin, Mike Baum, and Crazy Murray, they have forged a sound that falls into that rare space that feels both vintage and happenin', fun, young, freaky and sexy. A sound that's already made the year for all kinds of esteemed folks all around the world, from the likes of Gorilla Versus Bear in the States to dear old Blighty's NME, as their debut long-player 'Headbangers On Ecstasy' dawned upon them.
A long-term sibling-like kinship with local cosmic pop wizards Ariel Pink and his Haunted Graffiti, leading to R. Stevie Moore, Kenny Gilmore and sometimes even Ariel himself taking the helm on recording sessions or chipping in on the album and onstage. It's a harmonious and poignant union, Puro's hazy 'Stevie & Christy' vintage charm, mixed with giddy weirdo abandon, marrying with Haunted Graffiti's beautiful madness like they were born for each other. NYC's most notorious left-of-centre hit factory Mexican Summer - home to the likes of Best Coast and Washed Out - grant 'Headbangers...' release in America, and Record Makers (Sebastien Tellier, Kavinsky , TURZI) for the rest of the world.
‘Stilyagi’ (which features Ariel Pink) is a vivid showcase of the band at its most deranged and sweet peak. While staples like 'California Shakedown' and 'Luv Goon' reveal a groove-stricken backbone that sets off Skylar's trademark intricate spiralling twangs with airy, naive tension, and a her big sis' darting, spectral chants and woozy wooing. Piper nods to 'Silky Eyes' as one of their finest three and a bit minutes in terms of nailing the bands idealist dream-weaving manifesto "A beautiful, omnipotent thing capable of fanning the flames of every feeling and communicating ideas that are too difficult or awkward to put into words.”
With a world tour of epic proportions spreading the hazy dreams across the globe for pretty much the rest of 2011 and onward, they hit the UK shores in July and then go onto:
July 18th - Ruby Lounge Manchester
July 19th - WHITE HEAT @ Madame Jojo's Soho, London
July 20th - Windmill Brixton London
July 21st - Festival de-Affaire, Nijmegen, Holland
July 22nd - La Flèche d’Or, Paris, France
July 23rd - Midi Festival, Hyères, France
July 25th - Padova Radar Festival, Italy
July 26th - Hana-Bi, Ravenna, Italy
July 29th - Atomic Cafe, Münich, Germany

August 4th - Salzburg Festival, Salzburg, Austria
August 9th - Comet, Berlin, Germany
August 10th - Beta, Copenhaguen, Denmark
August 11th - Way Out West Festival, Göteborg, Sweden
August 12th - Pop Up @ Øyafestivalen, Oslo, Norway
August 14th - Summer Sonic, Tokyo, Japan
Pitchfork : ‘Rising dream pop duo’
Fader : ‘… their relationship blooms outward into their music’
Spin : ‘… Moaning and cooing over twinkly, woozy guitars and stumbly rythms, gazing blankly into the lonely horizon’
Flaunt : ‘It’s leftfiels and crazy and totally fucking perfect. It’s pure and instinctual.’
LA Weekly : ‘The Band has a laid-back, dreamy, ambient sound that reminds you of AM radio pop played on a summer day’

“Many wonderful things have come out of the West Midlands – the balti, Steve Bull, the uniquely mangled vowel sounds of residents of Dudley – and to that list you can add Rob ‘The Voluntary Butler Scheme’ Jones.”GuardianGuide
When Voluntary Butler Scheme recently declared that the intention behind his latest album was “to blend all the different types of music I've been making together,” it seemed like a fairly insurmountable task – this is an act known for producing everything from Motown soul to J-Pop via Mark Mothersbaugh-style poptronica. But Grandad Galaxy is truly a musical cabinet of curiosities, bursting at the seams with strange sounds, melodies, effects and songs. Part instrumental, it follows the direction that the ‘Scheme, aka Dudley-based bedroom-pop architect Rob Jones, has been headed in from debut LP At Breakfast, Dinner, Tea via the recent cut-and-paste Chevreul EP

Fresh from another storming and sweaty UK and European tour (which included a Police escort to their show in Munich), The Pigeon Detectives announce the release of the second single ‘Lost’. Taken from their third album UP, GUARDS AND AT ‘EM! which was recorded over the period of two months in New York City under the watchful eyes of producer Justin Gerrish (who’s last major job was helping to mix Vampire Weekend’s ‘Contra’).
Howling Bells will release their new album on September 12th on Cooking Vinyl. Recorded in Las Vegas with The Killers’ Mark Stoermer producing, The Loudest Engine will be preceded by a clutch of live shows, including a London date at the Electric Ballroom on September 15th.

Howling Bells' desert sessions were the final part of a year-long writing adventure that saw the band, on their own tours and with the likes of Coldplay and The Killers, wander through strange American outposts and seedy European back streets in their downtime. Their travels provided endless lyrical inspiration; much of The Loudest Engine was written on the road.

GLASTONBURY - JOHN PEEL STAGE + MORE SHOWS ANNOUNCED
My Tiger My Timing formed in London in 2008. They were described by The Guardian as “deliciously upbeat and groove-laden post-punk” and by Clash as “alternative pop with a dark heart that’s bursting with desire”, and were recently named Beck’s European Newcomer 2010, CMJ’s Spotlight Artist and NME’s Breakthrough Artist of the Week.
The band have released two singles - This Is Not The Fire and I Am The Sound - and an EP, with material produced by New Young Pony Club and Hot Chip, released through Kitsuné, Pure Groove and Modular Records.
Inspired by rainy grey holidays spent in the city, wishing back to the never-ending summers of the past, the band’s third single combines irresistible schoolyard singsong with hypnotic drums, shimmering electronics and angular guitars, to create a perfect slice of modern leftfield pop. The band are currently finishing their debut album, with Endless Summer released on August 1st.
Live highlights have included tours of Europe in 2010, slots on the BBC Introducing stage at Radio 1′s Big Weekend, at the Isle of Wight and V Festival, and supporting Phoenix and The Ting Tings in Germany. The band play the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury this summer. They have also confirmed a few more dates:
BRETON announce their signing to FatCat Records, the label who discovered Sigur Ros, Animal Collective and No Age.
The signing follows a very busy year for BRETON, a year that saw them release a critically acclaimed EP trilogy, as well as creating fantastic videos (Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, Penguin Prison, Flats) and remixes (Temper Trap, Local Natives, IS TROPICAL, Chapel Club, Tricky, Esben and the Witch) under their bretonLABS incarnation.
Just returned from the Tom Vek tour, BRETON are about to leave for Mosfellsbaer, Iceland, where they will be recording their self-produced debut album in Sigur Ros' Sundlaugin Studio.
The as-yet untitled album is set to be released on FatCat Records in early 2012.
To give a taste of things to come, BRETON have made available a free download via their Facebook page; a demo version of a track set to appear on the forthcoming album.

RELEASE DATE: 7TH MARCH 2011 (CD + DIGITAL DOWNLOAD)
LAUNCH PARTY: 9TH MARCH 2011 (HOXTON SQUARE BAR & KITCHEN) UK TOUR: MARCH
FINALLY Ulterior's long-awaited debut album is to be released on March 7th 2011 with a string of live dates planned across Europe and the UK and an exclusive album launch show at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, London on Wednesday the 9th of March, with support from the hotly tipped Islington Boys Club and the ever ethereal Neurotic Mass Movement.
Wild In Wildlife' effortlessly wears its references on its sleeve. It is an unmistakable stadium sound synthesis that sonically falls somewhere between Simple Minds, The Sisters Of Mercy and Billy Idol… a shimmering noise-noir-pop production all set to their distinct brand of hypnotic chrome overdrive.
Recorded and mixed by long serving band producer Zlaya Hadzic (Sonic Youth / Tortoise) with two tracks also mixed by Robert Harder (Whitey / Brian Eno / Kylie) the end result is arguably their finest hour. Seductive hooks and vocals shine clearly amid the storm, all of which is set to a vicious mechanoid foundation of synthesizers and drum machines; a move that has already set Ulterior crucially apart from their contemporaries.
The album is to be released on Speed Records and will be available through both Rough Trade and online through the band's brand new website -www.ulteriorlondon.com. A signed, limited edition hand-silk-screened print comes with the pre-ordered CD and a new tee-shirt design issued to coincide with the album release.
The sleeve artwork is an adaptation of the English contemporary artist and painter and founder of the Neomodern group - Guy Denning's 'Where's Your Famous Golden Touch'.

Just over a year after his debut album, The Voluntary Butler Scheme – aka Dudley-based bedroom pop architect Rob Jones – is back with a new sound and a new four-track EP comprising two vocal songs, two instrumentals and around about a million ideas.
Here is a first little taster, brand new track "To The Height of a Frisbee"
And here's, a video to go with it created by Amercian fan Sam Fathallah:
Since making the first album, The Voluntary Butler Scheme have toured the UK with Adam Green and signed a US deal with influential indie Park The Van. Jones has seen his tracks pop up in such varied places as Grey's Anatomy, a Dell ad, Eastenders and, er, Countryfile.
The EP is a taster of the next Voluntary Butler Scheme album, which will be a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks. For someone with such wildly far-ranging influences and outputs, Jones bravely says his aim for the album is “to blend all the different types of music I've been making together.”
On April 11th Joan As Police Woman releases a new single from her rapturously received third album The Deep Field (Play It Again Sam).
New single, Nervous concerns what Joan calls "the freedom to admit you're vulnerable and anxious," in a new-found relationship, rather than just projecting bravado.
Some artists play a part, act stuff out, and like to hide behind imagery. That's fine, but it's not for everyone. Some, like Joan, want to communicate direct, to tell the truth, and share the honesty. To honour themselves and their audience. It may be cliché to read about it but wonderful to experience.
Nervous begins with a taut drum intro, Moog bass, surging female back-ups and flaming guitar coda. Joan says she was smitten by Marvin Gaye, Sly and the Family Stone, Bowie, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder too, influences all apparent on her new single.
Q 4 stars - Joan Wasser has never sounded so winning as on Nervous, a celebration of the joys of new love
The Pigeon Detectives are pleased to announce details of a new single, a new album and their first UK headline shows since selling out London's Alexandra Palace at end of 2008. In the interim, the band took leave before recharging and have spent the past year writing and demoing in New York before recording in earnest in the Autumn of 2010. The entire experience has been a new one for the quintet from Leeds whose two previous albums - which have now sold in excess of half a million copies in the UK , were written and recorded on home turf and the first fruits of which will be the brand new single 'Done In Secret' . Recorded at Brooklyn Recording Company with Justin Gerrish taking on production and mixing duties, the album 'UP,GUARDS AND AT 'EM!'' will be released on 4th April through Dance To The Radio and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally via all usual outlets. The full tracklisting:
1. 'She Wants Me' 2. 'Lost' 3. 'What Can I Say?' 4. 'Need To Know This' 5. 'Done In Secret' 6. 'What You Gonna Do ?' 7. 'Turn Out The Lights' 8. 'Through The Door' 9. 'Go At It Completely' 10. 'I Don't Know You'
For a sneak preview of the new album, watch footage of the band recording the album in NYC and listen to album track "She Wants Me" here:
Meanwhile the band have also announced details of their first headlining UK shows of 2011 and will be airing tracks off the new album when they appear as follows: March 28th - MIDDLESBOROUGH - Empire March 29th - GLASGOW - ABC March 30th - MANCHESTER - Ritz March 31st - LIVERPOOL - Academy April 2nd - BIRMINGHAM - Institute April 3rd - OXFORD - Academy April 4th - NORWICH - UEA April 6th - LONDON - Shepherds Bush Empire April 8th - BOURNEMOUTH - Old Fire Station April 9th - PORTSMOUTH - Wedgewood Rooms April 10th - BRISTOL - Trinity April 11th - COVENTRY - Kasbah April 12th - LEEDS - Metro University
From the coast of North Wales Holy Coves unleash The Droner EP on February 14th, 2011; a gut busting, snarling blues influenced rock outing. Belying their Holyhead heritage, it's a debut fit to fill city stadiums. Is it early Smashing Pumpkins, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's oil-slick grooves? Perhaps, but then it's also wholly new.
Atmospherics akin to Black Angels are as audible on the record as when the Coves take to the stage. Which is no surprise really, considering the EP was recorded at Bryn Derwen Studios, with the foothills of Snowdonia looming large over the epic landscape. This is country as big as the band's sound, so there's no more fitting a setting for these mountainous tracks to have been made in.
It was here the band developed a strong bond with producer David Wrench (Bat For Lashes, British Sea Power, Race Horses), himself a member of Julian Cope's The Black Sheep. After being involved with the band since their early demos, it made sense that the musician-cum-studio wizard had his deft hand in the creation of Holy Coves' first official release; the next chapter of a story gaining rapid momentum.
